DRAGONS: RACE TO THE EDGE All-New Netflix Original Series

By Jo Beth Bootz August 4, 2015

It’s time to take to the skies with our favorite heroes in the new original series, DRAGONS: RACE TO THE EDGE, from DreamWorks Animation, which premiered June 26 on Netflix. We had the opportunity to take a first look at this brand new family-friendly show in advance of the release date which was an absolute thrill for the dragon lovers in our home.

You may be familiar with our adventurous dragon friends thanks to How To Train Your Dragon and How To Train Your Dragon 2, based upon the books by Cressida Cowell. The show fills in the gap between the two movies and answers many of the questions posed by fans. Even if you haven’t had the opportunity to view these movies, the new Netflix series gives you enough background and development that you can start the show fresh and feel like you have a good understanding of the storyline from start to finish. The show is really made for all kinds of dragon fans. The 13-episode, animated series combines a mix of adventure, mystery, humor and excitement that has something for everyone in your family.

When our family started the first episode, I couldn’t help but see amazement in the eyes of my husband and daughter in terms of the graphics. We almost felt like we were watching mini movies instead of television episodes because of the high-quality graphics and sound. I’ve watched many Netflix original series over the years, but this is the first kid-friendly show I have had the opportunity to watch. You feel transported into another world for 20 minutes at a time (which is the perfect length for those little ones in your house) and you are automatically hooked from the first second. Also, there is something magical about dragons, especially when it involves our favorite team, Hiccup and Toothless.

Hiccup is such a relatable hero as he deals with so many emotions we all encounter on a daily basis. When he discovers the ancient Dragon Eye, a whole new world of adventure opens up for him. This discovery makes him realize the vastness of the world and it’s fun to see children watch the episodes and relate to the excitement of the world around them (and beyond). Hiccup begins to realize the enchantment of the world that lies beyond his homeland of Berk.

New dragons, new lands… everything that is revealed to Hiccup is exciting for viewers, but I don’t want to spoil any of the good storylines for you! Of course, my daughter, specifically, now wants to have a pet dragon and name him Toothless. Not sure we can find a dragon at the local shelter anytime soon, but thankfully our Netflix subscription will let her imagination run wild with the entire series. We have become fans of all the new dragon rider teams that you get to meet throughout the series.

The episodes are filled with action and adventure, but they are not too scary for the young viewers in your home. Each episode contains a mini cliff-hanger which makes you want to continue with the show. Our advice, be prepared to "binge watch" as you won’t want to take your eyes off the screen! You get wrapped up quickly into the storyline and want to know what happens around every corner.

My MacKid watching team (which included my husband and oldest daughter) are huge fans of animated series and were glued to the screen from start to finish. We can’t wait for the premiere date so we can experience the full series from start to finish on Netflix. Make sure you are a subscriber today to enjoy this incredible new series. We give it a super MacKid thumbs up!
