The Clever Girl is a short and sweet little book about a girl who likes to make robots, and the adventures she imagines that they have together. It is a cute story, with some fun details and parts that are sure to make little readers giggle, that gives the youngest audience an introduction to the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).
Author and illustrator Craig Snodgrass describes, “Basically I made this story up on the fly one evening at bedtime. Over time and multiple re-tellings, the story began to take shape and develop its own cadence that my daughter would follow along with. I also wanted to plant the seeds and show my daughter that the world of robots and engineering isn't off limits to her because she's a girl. So I used elements she is interested in, like robots and playing outside, to help her visualize the story.”
The Clever Girl and her robot friends, Rojo and Verde, are the main characters, but the real stars of the book are the illustrations. On his website, www.craigsnodgrassart.com, Craig describes his artwork as a whole, “I like to think that I tell stories with these pretty little pictures. Stories that are inspired by retro science-fiction, rock and roll posters, and old stuffed animals. Hopefully you’ll enjoy them as much as I do.” Art fans and little aspiring artists will be delighted to find a few pages at the end of The Clever Girl that show the artistic development of the characters, with a few comments from Craig about the progression of the designs.
