Simple Tips to Avoid Colds & Flu!

By Eric Cohen August 4, 2015
In the Middle Ages, people believed diseases like colds and flu were caused by toxic vapors called miasma that came from the ground. Some scholars even suggested that the alignment of planets with the earth caused the release of this miasma.

Now everyone knows about germs and their role in colds and flu, yet many do little to prevent themselves from getting sick. There are some simple best practices that can help avoid falling ill this cold and flu season, such as:

Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. Even if no one is sick in your house, it’s still a good practice as germs may be present. According to Katie Green of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “be sure to use a product that both cleans and disinfects to help reduce the number of germs in the home and classroom to lessen the risk of spreading infection.” Notice she says "classroom". Send your child to school armed with wipes like those from Lysol. Starting mid October, you can see the latest in the spread of the Flu on the CDC site here

Washing Hands. This one we’ve all heard a thousand times, but it is one of the most effective ways to avoid colds & flu. Donna Mazyck, head of the National Association of School Nurses, says “sing happy birthday twice while washing your hands” to be sure you’ve been thorough and germ free.

And last, keep your kids active. Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be running around a bit. Some research has shown that regular activity has a positive effect on our immune system.

Oh yeah, if you or your kids do get sick, stay home, keep your sick kids home, and help your community.
