Building Technology With Kids

RadioShack Hobby Kits

By Sponsored December 1, 2015
Holidays are a time to spend with the family, and with school breaks coming up, we Macaroni Moms and Dads are always thankful for fun, educational activities we can do with our kids – especially if it gets them away from a screen!

We were excited to learn about RadioShack’s Hobby Kits, which are perfect gifts or stocking stuffers for your little hobbyist. They provide a hands-on family activity while teaching your kids about science, technology, engineering and math (S.T.E.M.).

Even if circuitry isn’t your thing, RadioShack has a library of educational and informational videos hosted by Wanda F. Bonder, RadioShack Knowledge Director right on its website. The Core Lesson videos, “Making Circuits” and “World of Components,” are good starting points for you and your kids to learn the basic lingo and graduate onto one of RadioShack’s 12 Hobby Kits and make a cool, functional circuit.

All kits include the printed circuit board and all the necessary components. To build these kits, you’ll also need a soldering iron, solder, wire cutters and a 9-volt battery, all of which can be purchased at your neighborhood RadioShack or online at www.RadioShack.com

For those who are new to soldering, RadioShack offers a tutorial video on “Secrets to Soldering” detailing the purpose of soldering, steps to follow and useful tips and tricks to build the hobby kit. Many kits are accompanied by instructional videos to walk your kids through the building process if you’re not able to do it along with them.
RadioShack offers the following Hobby Kits:
  • Water Alarm Kit
  • Theremin Kit
  • Super Stereo Ear Kit
  • Sound-to-Light Kit
  • Running Microbug Kit
  • Mesmerize Kit
  • Half Watt Amplifier
  • Electronic Dice Kit
  • Decision Maker Kit
  • Color Organ Kit
  • Electronic Clock Kit
  • Brain Game Kit
In addition to these 12 kits ranging in difficulty, RadioShack also has a Makeblock mBot robot building kit for the more advanced makers.

RadioShack’s Hobby Kits can be purchased online at RadioShack.com or at your local RadioShack electronics store. Check out RadioShack’s website and YouTube page to watch videos and learn how to make circuits.
