According to the American Red Cross, seven people die each day in home fires. Seven people! Planning is the key to helping keep your pack safe. Here's how:
Step 1
Make sure your family can safely escape a home fire in under 2 minutes. The American Red Cross has created this worksheet to help you plan and prepare your 2-minute drill today.
In addition to the worksheet, here are additional tips for fire escape planning:
- Ensure that all household members know two ways to escape from every room of your home.
- Make sure everyone knows where to meet outside in case of fire.
- Practice escaping from your home at least twice a year and at different times of the day. Practice waking up to smoke alarms, low crawling and meeting outside. Make sure everyone knows how to call 9-1-1.
- Teach household members to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothes should catch on fire.
Step 2
Test your smoke alarms monthly. Make sure you and your family are alerted as soon as a fire is detected. If a smoke alarm isn’t working, fix it. That day. That minute.
Step 3
Teach your children well. Even young children can be taught the importance of getting out and staying out.
Introduce your children to firemen wearing full gear -- imagine how scary a fireman would look to a child in a smoky room -- and there are stories of young children hiding from the very people trying to help them. Make sure you child has met a fireman -- mask and all -- before he needs to.
The American Red Cross has created the Monster Guard app to help teach kids 7 through 11 tips on staying safe in a fun way. With all the games your kids play, why not add one that will help keep them safe?
