Nonprofit of the Month: How Pickles Save Lives

By Alison Wenger May 3, 2016
Next time you’re thinking about an option for lunch or where to grab a quick dinner in between your kids’ evening activities, consider a stop at Firehouse Subs. Your visit could help provide life-saving equipment to a community in need.

Firehouse Subs created the Firehouse Public Safety Foundation more than 10 years ago after founders Chris and Robin Sorensen witnessed first-hand the devastation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The Foundation provides funding, resources, and support in communities served by Firehouse Subs, helping them to improve the life-saving capabilities of emergency service entities and public service organizations.

Since its inception, the Foundation has donated more than $18 million to more than 1,000 recipients in 45 states and Puerto Rico. Through the years, the Foundation has donated extrication tools, all-terrain vehicles with rescue capabilities, fire extinguisher training systems, bunker gear, K-9 units, automated external defibrillators, and bulletproof vests.

Additionally, Foundation donations include disaster relief, scholarships, public safety prevention education and purchasing crucial emergency response equipment such as thermal imaging cameras, which can detect heat given off by people that may be trapped in a burning building, allowing firefighters to accurately locate victims through the heavy smoke.

“It’s an honor to be able to give back to those who put their life at risk every day to protect ours. Whether it’s a piece of equipment that helps rescue victims in motor vehicle accidents, or it’s the carbon monoxide detector that prevents carbon monoxide poisoning, we’re helping save lives and it’s an incredible feeling,” said Meghan Vargas, Senior Manager of Foundation Development for Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

Recognizing how many of our children grow up in admiration of firefighters, and with International Firefighters Day being celebrated on May 4, Macaroni Kid is excited to share the great work that the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation is doing–with your help.

So how can your family get involved in the fundraising effort? It all starts with pickles! Each Firehouse Subs restaurant recycles empty five-gallon pickle buckets and sells them to customers for $2 each.

They also have a Round Up program allowing you to round your bill to the nearest dollar and canisters at the registers for spare change.
