A Conversation With My Kids About a Transgender Girl

By Eric Cohen July 5, 2016
My son started his gig as a camp counselor and made a vague reference to one of the campers who happens to be transgender. My daughter chimed in "Oh, yeah, she's in my grade at school".

My wife and I looked at each other in shock! How could it be!

No, probably not what you are thinking, we weren't shocked that there was a transgender child in our community or school. We were shocked that our kids thought it was no big deal. That our daughter was aware of it all year and never thought to mention it.

And by shocked, I mean in a positive way. That our kids are raised in a time and environment where other kids are free to be who they are and it's simply accepted. Not only is it not questioned or challenged, it's not even remarkable...in the literal sense, it doesn't warrant remarking on it.

My wife and I composed ourselves and asked a few questions about the child, and then the conversation moved on. After all, it wasn't remarkable.
