Icing Smiles: Nonprofit Delivers Cakes and Smiles

By Alison Wenger August 2, 2016
This month we’d like to introduce you to Icing Smiles, a nonprofit focused on serving children with life-threatening illnesses. Through a network of more than 8,000 volunteers and almost 200 partner organizations, Icing Smiles provides more than 200 birthday cakes each month.

Icing Smiles, which is based in Ellicott City, Md., has served nearly 11,000 custom created cakes since its founding in 2010. The nonprofit delivers cakes and smiles to children in all 50 states, and now has grown to include chapters in Holland and Canada.

Cakes are delivered to children who have a life-threatening medical condition that is considered progressive, degenerative, or malignant and are within two years of their most recent treatment. They also serve children who require frequent or extended hospitalizations and are within two years of their most recent inpatient stay. Finally, Icing Smiles creates custom cakes for siblings of these children.

When a request for a cake is made, Icing Smiles matches the family with a volunteer baker in their area who works with the family to create the perfect custom cake for the child.

This sounds incredible, right?

If your family would like to join the Icing Smiles mission, there are a few different ways to get involved.
