My Little Pony:Twilight Sparkle, Teacher for a Day

Macaroni Kid App Review

By Lucy Silver October 5, 2011

Hasbro and Ruckus Media have teamed up to bring some familiar characters to iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.  The latest release, ‘My Little Pony: Twilight Sparkle, Teacher for a Day” is already a hit, reaching #1 on iTunes’ on the iPhone within the first week of release.  We had the chance to play around with the app and found it entertaining, engaging, and educational.  Kids will love the bright animation and fun story; parents will appreciate the focus on reading skills and on-the-go entertainment.

The storybook has three options for reading the material:  you and your child can read the written words alone, choose the “read to me” option with light-up words, or read and record your own voice.  Led by Twilight Sparkle and her friends Spike the Dragon, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy, the story tells the history of the ponies’ homeland, Equestria.

Fun activities appear throughout the app, giving children the chance to interact and play along with the story.  Kids can guide Twilight Sparkle from one place to another through a tilt-and-turn maze and try to “spot the difference” between two images.  Each activity is a chance to add words to the “word bank”, which are then used to fill in the blanks of a diary entry at the end of the story. Other features of the app include a “Meet the Ponies” page and brief video clips.

All in all, we really love this app! It's a perfect addition to your child's digital bookshelf. It is enjoyable for all age groups, the big brother of one tester had a lot of fun recording his voice for his younger sibling.  Plus it teaches young children the value of friendship and problem solving. A great value at just 99 cents, its available now in the iTunes store.
