VOXX 808 Headphones - A Macaroni Dad Review

Too hip to hop?

By Eric Cohen March 5, 2013
As Macaroni Dad nears the half-century mark, I am often faced with choice of cool or class. Big over the ear headphones are cool, little white Apple earbuds are class. So when VOXX (formerly AudioVox) sent me a set of the new 808 Headphones to review, I was skeptical...but intrigued.

First off, I've never even tried the big headphones from other brands, mainly because they cost $200 and even more. And I'm not a huge music person, but I do listen to my share, and I watch a fair bit of TV on my mobile devices. So after one try, I was shocked how much better the sound was than via any of the earbuds I'm used to. Clearer, bolder and better are adjectives that come to mind. And I like the fact that they aren't fallling out of my ears all the time like the earbuds.

As a dad, our house is full of noises, kids, dogs, wife, etc. which can be distracting, but on the rare opportunities I had to watch Season 2 of Game of Thrones on my iPad, the 808's were awesome. The over the ear thing does a good job of blocking outside noise, they were comfortable, and the sound was immersive. I believe they actually make watching programs on a tablet more enjoyable because even though the screen is small, the sound is now "big".

They look great, and as a testament to that, when I put them on both my kids were like "Whoa, can I try them". If you are going to go with big bold headphones, they better look good. They are comfortable and light, I travel a lot, and I look forward to taking them on the plane.

I realize I'm not the target audience for these type of headphones, but maybe by coming up with a price that's reasonable ($89), VOXX is on to something and more moms and dads will be sporting headphones instead of earbuds. All I know is I'm keeping mine, the kids can't have them.

Note, VOXX sent me the headphones to review and keep. All opinions are my own and no other compensation, bribery or swag was received by Macaroni Dad.
