Back to School Shopping at Target: Done and Done

When I was in elementary school, we waited all summer to find out which teacher we had and which of our friends would be in our class. The first day back was riddled with anxiety … where was my new classroom? Would my teacher be one of the nice ones, or the scary 4th grade teacher who sort of looked like a bird? That first day, we made our way to our new classroom, hugged the few friends we found there, mourned the best friend who was now two long doors down and who we’d only see at recess … and got our school supply list. And that afternoon, we’d collide with the entire elementary school, madly shopping at the one store in town for the long list of school supplies that we were required to produce by week’s end. It was chaos.

I’m so glad school supply shopping has evolved. My daughter celebrated “moving up day” during her last week of school in June. All of the kids visited their 4th grade classroom and met their new grade teacher. And they were handed their school supply list for next year, giving us the entire summer to prepare.

Target has been our go-to for back to school shopping for several years. Yup, it is a 45 minute drive from our house. But it is worth it to find every single item on the ever-increasing school supply list in one spot and have the chance to “give back” while we shop.

So when Target asked us to share our back to school shopping experience with our readers, we were thrilled. We headed there this week and, as usual, found everything we need, from pre-sharpened pencils (who knew?) to one-gallon Ziploc bags, a box of tissues and a Spanish to English dictionary. Three folders -- cute kitten photos and all – and one red backpack. 30 minutes and we were done and done before the end of July.

This season, Target has an important reason to get your back-to-school shopping done on time! Between now and August 2, Target will donate one school supply item to a student in need for every up&up school supply purchased, potentially impacting nearly two million kids by donating up to $25 million in school supplies this back-to-school season.

The program was inspired by Yoobi, a Target-exclusive brand of school supplies with a “One for You. One for Me.” mission, and builds on Target’s longstanding partnership with the Kids In Need Foundation, which operates a national network of Resource Centers that provide free school supplies for in-need students.

“For millions of kids living in poverty, the right school supplies often become a luxury instead of a necessity,” explains Laysha Ward, president, Community Relations, Target. “We know that giving is important to Target’s guests. This program gives them an opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of others and set kids up for success through the simple act of buying school supplies.”

Right on Target. Thanks for making our Back to School shopping experience simple, fun and impactful.
