April 7, 2015
Are you being driven crazy by constant sibling fighting? Rivalry, competition, jealousy, and taunting? According to one study, siblings ages 3-7 fight, on average, 7 times per hour. What’s a mama to do?

The Mother Company is here to help.

Ruby’s Studio: The Siblings Show

The latest in the award-winning “Ruby’s Studio” series offers kids – and parents – 45 minutes of entertainment (and education) with beloved show host Ruby who guides kids through old-school animated segments around topics like resolving conflict, preparing for a new sibling, a collaborative sibling-themed craft encouraging teamwork at home, and a foot-stomping music video, performed by Grammy award-winning Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band that will get your kids dancing together. Can we get a group “Hallelujah”?!

Resolve Rivalry

Sibling rivalry is a tough and all-too-common issue for families. Often times, siblings fight in order to get attention. They want to feel like they have a special place in the family. Make sure that every child knows they are loved and special, and give each child their own special time, which can help decrease rivalry.

Boost Harmony

Sharing is the number one issue with little ones, and this (as we all know) can lead to taunting, yelling, and even hitting – which is not OK! It’s essential to teach kids how to use their words so they can work it out and get along, especially without mom or dad being used as a referee. We love that in one animated segment about a pesky little sister Tabby Cat who wants in on her brother’s playdate, the siblings learn to share their feelings with sentences that start with “I feel…” - teaching kids at home one way to work it out.

Preparing for New Family Members

Whether it’s a new baby, a step-sibling, or a new parent, change in the family unit is profound on little ones. Preparing kids for what to expect while also allowing them a safe space to experience their wide range of emotions – both excited and anxious – will help ensure they feel safe and understood. This show does just that with a gorgeous watercolor segment that follows a little girl as she becomes a big sister. The story celebrates the new arrival and explores the more challenging aspects (and, to boost, will have your kids using the word “conflicted” accurately). Preparing children for the reality of a new baby, and giving them the language to help articulate their feelings around their changing role, will lessen backlash and acting out. We vote yes for that!

Celebrate Family

Every family is different, and that’s worth celebrating. Blended, adopted, divorced, or traditional, all families run on the same thing: love! Teaching kids to recognize family regardless of the box it comes in helps everyone feel validated and get along better. We appreciate the “Garden Theater” animated segment that explores one little beetle’s adoption story into the family of dragonflies.
