A Father and Son SXSW Experience

Seeing the world through your child's eyes

By Eric Cohen - Macaroni Dad April 7, 2015
My son is an avid gamer. I am not. The fun that came from my character dying in the first three minutes of a game has worn off for us both. But as I know that video gaming is something he enjoys, I took him to SXSW (South By Southwest) in Austin, TX, to partake in the Video Game Expo and show.

For him it was heaven - an entire convention hall full of the latest and greatest in video games and paraphernalia. And while I did not get much out of the gaming side, watching my son engage with the vendors, experience new products and just be in "his world" was a rewarding journey.

I found that when you get out of your own way and just allow your child to do the things they love, because they love them, not because you push them, that it can open up a new appreciation. I was even able to challenge him in a game of Push Me Pull You (I was winning 2 to 1, before he beat me 3 to 2). To mys on's delight, he was given a PDP wiiU Fight Pad controller to test. He gave it four stars!

But more exciting for him was being able to play a pre-release "alpha" version of a game of Bierzerkers. The experience of being on the cutting edge opened his eyes to a world beyond just playing games, but seeing more of how they are developed, and even some of the business behind them.

And for me, the ability to both experience his world, and be able to expand his horizons was a trip worth taking.
