Mommy and Maddie Spa Day

By Joyce Shulman June 2, 2015
What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than with an at-home spa afternoon with my daughter! And a recent event with the team from Organic Spa Magazine gave us plenty of fantastic products to try. Of course, the needs of my daughter’s gorgeous nine-year-old skin and my 49-year-old-skin are quite different, so we focused on products that were great for us both.

Pretty much everything requires you to start with clean hair and skin so we kicked off with quick showers and shampoos using Indian Hemp & Tamanu co-wash from Nubian Heritage. It was incredibly gentle and moisturizing and made me think that no other hair treatment was needed. But we couldn't resist the Y.A.M. honey-based hair mask from Bekura. It smelled good enough to eat ... so I tasted it and, while it wasn’t bad, it was better spread on our hair.

Once our tresses were well coated, we slathered our faces in Sea Kelp & Ginseng All-Over Mask from Lather. The cool green gel was refreshing, clean and fantastic. Then it was outside for fifteen minutes to let the products do their magic.

It was a beautiful spring day and we sat with our backs to the sun and chatted about beauty, nature and what’s happening at school. Trust me, if you want to get a nine-year-old to open up, let her hide behind a facial mask!

After a glorious fifteen minutes, it was time to rinse the hair and face masks. The long showers were the perfect time for full body scrubs and here my daughter and I parted company: I opted for Scrub Me Nice-and-Gritty Body Scrub from Balanced Guru, while Maddie choose Strawberry Lemon Foaming Food Facial Scrub from Crumbles, which she reported smelled great and was “so cool and really gentle.”

Bodies washed and scrubbed, the last step was a full body moisturizer. Here we went for our favorite tried, true and pure: Moisturizing Cream from Cetaphil. I finished it off with Everclen Face Cream which truly is the cleanest-feeling moisturizer I’ve ever used.

The result? Smooth skin, soft hair and a full 90 minutes of Maddie and Mommy time.
