Madeline at the White House

Madeline Wishes You a Happy President's Day

By Joyce Shulman February 8, 2011

Just in time for President's Day, John Bemelmans Marciano, the grandson of Madeline’s original creator, brings us Madeline at the White House.

In this engaging and charming tale, the incomparable Madeline arrives at the White House and quickly befriends the president's lonely daughter.  Along the way, they encounter a magician, celebrate Easter, play dress up, share stories and take a magic ride in the night sky.

“The idea for sending Madeline to the White House was my grandfather’s and grew out of his friendship with Jacqueline Kennedy,” John explains.  “In a series of letters from late 1961 and early 1962, my grandfather sounded out the First Lady on ideas for the book, which he proposed calling Madeline visits Caroline, with text from Mrs. Kennedy herself. My grandfather died before the book was finished.”

How thrilled we are to have new Madeline stories to share with our children!  Thank you Mr. Bemelmans Marciano for keeping her spirit alive and the stories coming.
