Ask Maggie: The Term 'Work Wife' Bugs Me

December 4, 2018

Dear Maggie,

My husband's business partner is a woman. I have no problem with that. She's awesome and I trust my husband completely. But the other day, he referred to her as his "work wife" and it really, really rubbed me the wrong way. Should I say anything? To him? To her? I was going to just let it go, but it's still bugging me.

Dear Buggin' Out,

This one’s as simple as downing a cupcake before your kiddo comes around the corner! That’s a skill honed over years... just as is communication with your lovely hubby!

So let’s keep it simple: Because this bothers you, tell him.

I adhere to very few rules in my wonderful relationship, but the one I do adhere to? I don’t have to understand, agree, or even commiserate with my significant other’s feelings, but I do respect that he has them. I love him, he loves me, and we are super good together. For this reason, I tend to listen harder, don’t worry about agreeing, and look at him like the human he is when I can’t understand the words that are coming out of his insane mouth. He does the same for me. (Between you and me, everything I say makes perfect sense.)

I would venture to bet that a simple heart-to-heart over some cupcakes would solve this.

Then you can gobble them in one bite when you hear little feet in the distance!

There’s only one wife that he can share cupcakes with – and I bet he loves you more than enough to take care of this issue.

And if he doesn’t? I’m sure there’s a work husband lying around somewhere ready to help the situation.

P.S.  I do not condone sharing cupcakes with the proposed work husband.
