🦇Learn About Bats With Smithsonian Experts

Friday October 28, 2022 1:00 pm
Virtual Event

Description

Join Smithsonian Museum for a behind-the-scenes look at BATS!

From the Smithsonian:

Did someone say bats?! Celebrate the season with Museum Technician Ingrid Rochon and Graduate Student Intern Lauren Caspers on this special edition Spooky Smithsonian Science How!

Streaming from behind the scenes at the National Museum of Natural History, Ingrid and Lauren will show your students that bats come in all shapes and sizes and are, just maybe, not so spooky after all. Students will hone their observational skills by making scientific illustrations of the specimens they see. They’ll compare their drawings of different bats — from vampire bats to nectar bats to giant flying foxes — and predict what different bats eat based on their body adaptations. They will also see how different museum specimens are stored and cared for and will ultimately learn about the value of collections for understanding the world around us.

  • This webinar is designed for students in grades 3-5, but will be of interest to older students, too. It will be approximately 45 minutes with interactive polls and Q&A, followed by a 15-minute Q&A.
  • This webinar complements the Animal Adaptations and Insect Illustration school programs and can be used as an extension resource.
  • The primary goals of this webinar are to help students find value in studying the natural world, build their interest and personal connections to science, and learn about science careers.

This webinar will be facilitated by Museum Educator Maggy Benson.

This program will be presented via Zoom webinar. Please use this link to join the webinar: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/89335291879
