National Costume Swap Day

Freshened by Febreze

October 5, 2011

Two toddler princesses, one fairy with wings, a Star Wars storm trooper, a Harry Potter cape with wand and one ice cream cone, complete with a cherry on top.  That's the inventory of old Halloween costumes taking up residence in the back of my kids' closets.  It's the same story in closets across the country.  In fact, according to one recent estimate, 24 million pounds of costumes land in our Nation’s landfills each year.

Macaroni Kid is proud to be partnering with Febreze to reuse and refresh those gently worn costumes this Halloween season.  Rather than toss old costumes, parents are invited to participate in National Costume Swap Day™ events occurring across the Country this October.  During the days leading up to the swap, parents can drop off gently used costumes.  Then, join Macaroni Kid and Febreze on swap day to select a “new to them” costume for their kids.

Febreze will be on hand at 25 Macaroni Kid hosted costume swaps to refresh costumes and to send the first 50 attendees home with Febreze To Go.  Those interested in participating in a local costume swap event can log on to http://on.fb.me/FebrezeCostume to locate a swap with a freshening station near them. If their town is not listed, interested families are encouraged to visit www.greenhalloween.org for a larger list of local costume swap locations.

One of the first swaps of the season was held last weekend in Rhode Island.  More than 100 costumes were swapped or donated to a local charity.  There was face-painting, treats for the kids and coffee for the adults.  A little Febreze Fabric Refresher helped get rid of musty costume odor and the Febreze To Go samples were a big hit.  The most common comment?  “I hope you will be doing this again next year!”  We hope so too!

A last tip? Before putting your Halloween costumes away this year, spray them with Febreze Fabric Refresher to freshen before they go into storage. You never know what you might be able to reuse next year!
