Pulling up Instagram this morning, the first recommended post for me wasabout Slime. My 11 year-old daughter has been into Slime for the past few months but it never occurred to me this is a national phenomenon. A quick search in Insta revealed 1.6 million posts, wow!
A few weeks back when my daughter asked me to add glue to the grocery list I was surprised, I was even more surprised to find out our local grocery and K-Mart were sold out. In case you have missed out, Slime is a combination of ingredients that make a harmless goo, much like the old Nickelodeon slime. Basic ingredients include; glue, corn starch, food coloring, shaving cream, glitter and other decorations. Instructions follow below.
While this trend has taken up our kitchen for days, and used every plastic container in the house, I'm pretty excited about my daughter "getting her hands dirty". They are creating IRL (in real life) versus just staring at their screens. The girls share recipes and their creations, and of course, they do take it online to Youtube and Instagram, but I'm OK with that.
To create you own Slime, here are some simple instructions.
What you will need:
Two Mixing bowls
Wooden Spoon or Craft Stick
Borax (you can find this in the laundry section of your grocery store)
Water
Elmer's White Glue
Food Coloring (optional)
Directions:
In one bowl take one cup of water and add it to one tablespoon of
borax. Stir until completely dissolved with spoon. In the other
bowl, take a 1/4 cup of Elmer's glue and 1/4 cup of water and mix
well. Add the borax solution to the glue solution. If you want, now
is the time to add a couple of drops of food coloring. Stir together
until slime is formed. Store in an air tight container. When slime
starts to dry out or get dirty...just make a new batch! Now go get
slimy!
