MK: Nancy, what inspired the creation of Pasta Pals?
NH: I actually had the tag line first: "Together we have it all," which helps deliver the message that sticking together gives us strength. It manifested with my noodle characters -- Rigatoni, La-La Lasagna, The Angel Hairs, and Penne & Mac, who are all immigrants from Italy that end up in a market in Brooklyn, New York. They are a diverse group with a shared mission and they help each other on their journey.
The noodles create their own Pasta Painting, which is sold to a museum, and hang out with famous artists Andy Warhol, Leonardo da Vinci and Vincent Van Gogh. They also explore time travel after they meet Orson Welles and discover the joy of lasting, heartfelt memories and friendship. Individuality and staying true to yourself is a continuing theme in Pasta Pals, and is a message that can resonate with everyone, but especially children.
MK: Can you share some of the story with us?
NH: I would love to!
Pasta Pals Stories by Nancy Hahn
Penne is a beautiful girl who has a big crush on Mac. The two friends escaped from the Pasta factory in Italy along with The Angel Hairs, Elbows, Ziti and many of their relatives. They sought refuge America in every place they could find, from old warehouses to abandoned buildings. Now, they live on a shelf in an old grocery store in Brooklyn, New York that is closed temporarily. But time is running out! There is a For Sale sign on the door.
The noodle friends do not want to get separated, and they do not want to get into any hot water. (Oh, the doom and gloom of hot water! Yikes!)
Penne has to think fast in order to save the friends. Mac and the gang are just hanging out, playing games and wasting time...
