#MomsMakingWaves: WWE Wrestler Mickie James Fights For Women

'While we are powerful as individuals, we are even more powerful as a unit'

By Joyce Shulman December 4, 2018

Who she is:

Mickie James is a mom of a 4-year-old, a six-time WWE champion, a sometimes country singer and – at all times – an advocate for women taking their place at the table and in the ring.

How she's making waves:

Mickie is helping transform the role of women in the WWE from window dressing to serious competitors.

It's working:

On October 28, the WWE produced Evolution, the first WWE pay-per-view event to feature exclusively women's matches.

“If you told me ten years ago that this would happen, I’d have said you were crazy," Mickie said.

The fans spoke:

“We’ve been fighting for this for years but it wasn’t until the fans were so vocal” about wanting to see more women featured in WWE events that “what we had hoped and prayed for came to be," she said.

The longest battle:

It's taken Mickie 20 years of trying to make it in a man’s world and struggling to be taken seriously as a competitor to get to this point.

And now?

“It’s a good time to be a woman," she said.

It’s not just about wrestling:

“It’s about chipping away at stones to open doors that had been closed," Mickie said. It's about showing girls that they truly can be anything they dream of being.

It's also about the sisterhood:

The women of the WWE trust each other with their lives, their careers and their bodies, Mickie said.

"We’ve learned while we are powerful as individuals, we are even more powerful as a unit," she said.

What’s next:

Heading out for the WWE’s Holiday Tour, with a break for Christmas at home with her family.
