Fisher House Foundation Makes a House a Home

By Alison Wenger January 2, 2018

As many of us head back to school and work and reflect on the wonderful moments of this year’s holiday season, it’s important to remember values of kindness and service to others are ones we should practice all year long.

We here at Macaroni Kid are excited to bring you another year of our Nonprofit of the Month features where we highlight organizations impacting families and communities and ways in which you can become involved.

This month, we are introducing you to the Fisher House Foundation, which is best known for its network of more than 70 comfort homes where families of wounded, injured, or ill service members or veterans can stay at no cost while their loved one is receiving treatment at major military and VA medical centers.

Fisher Houses provide suites for families and are professionally furnished and decorated. They feature common kitchens and dining and living rooms where families can connect with other families in similar situations. The houses are gifted to the VA and Department of Defense upon completion. Currently, there are houses across the U.S., and in Germany and the United Kingdom.

Since they introduced their first home in 1990, the houses have served more than 305,000 families, like the Davis Family, and offered 7 million days of lodging. Learn more about Fisher Houses in this video.

The Fisher Houses are just one of the ways that this organization assists our veterans.

The Hero Miles program accepts frequent flyer mile donations to help provide round-trip airline tickets to families who have to travel far from home. The program has provided more than 63,000 tickets worth nearly $100 million.

Similar to the frequent flyer miles, the Foundation’s Hotels for Heroes program uses donated hotel points to help put families into nearby hotels if there are no availabilities in one of their Fisher Houses.

There are also other ways your family can get involved with Fisher House Foundation–whether it’s by shopping with Amazon Smile and designating them as your charity, volunteering, or making a gift. Visit www.fisherhouse.org to learn more.
